Shein demands vote recount at election of Astrakhan Governor
Oleg Shein, a candidate for the Governor of the Astrakhan Region, has recognized Alexander Zhilkin's victory, but stated violations at several polling stations and demanded a control vote recount.
The voters of the Astrakhan Region elected their regional leader on September 14, on the United Voting Day. The main rivals were Alexander Zhilkin (the "Edinaya Rossiya" (United Russia) Party), the incumbent Governor, and Oleg Shein (the "Spravedlivaya Rossiya" (Fair Russia) Party). The voter turnout was below 40%.
According to preliminary data of the regional CEC (Central Election Commission), Alexander Zhilkin won the election with 221,074 (75.09%) votes, while Oleg Shein gained 48,387 (16.43%) votes.
Oleg Shein said tonight that he recognized Zhilkin's victory and congratulated him; however, he stated falsifications fixed at a number of stations.
According to his story, he demanded a control recount of votes, but the territorial election commission (TEC) of the Lenin District of Astrakhan refused to do it. Shein said that his demand was supported by the regional CEC and Alexander Zhilkin himself.
Let us remind you that the Astrakhan Regional CEC received eight complaints regarding the organization of the elections.
