Georgia has become a Vice-Chair of the 69th Session of the UN General Assembly (GA), which takes place at the organization's headquarters in New York. The Georgian delegation is headed by Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili. His departure to the USA was preceded by a scandal, during which the President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili, who also preparing for the voyage, said that his visit to New York was disrupted.
According to the press service of the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), Georgia will stay as the Vice-Chair of the UN GA for one year. The delegates of this country take part, together with the President of the UN GA, in drafting the GA's agenda.
The dispute about who should go to the UN GA was held for a long time between the Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili and President Giorgi Margvelashvili. The Government has decided that the Premier should go; however, the President also received an invitation and confirmed his intention to be present in New York. On September 11, Giorgi Margvelashvili said that his visit was purposefully disrupted, the "Georgia-Online" reports.
On September 8, the Georgia's MFA said that only one delegation should go to the UN GA; and it should be headed by the Premier.
The current Constitution does not give a clear answer on who should go to New York, said Avtandil Demetrashvili, the former, in 2010-2011, Chairman of the Constitutional Commission, who had drafted constitutional amendments.
