Sochi residents oppose build-up of river bank

On September 24-26, residents of the micro-district KSM in Sochi held three rallies, attended by some 200 people, who spoke against the build-up of the water-protection zone on the left bank of the Sochi River.

The area, where they have begun building a multifunctional complex, contains a general-use walking mini-park. According to residents, on September 15, a yellow construction fence appeared there; and citizens demanded to remove before October 1.

Those present at the rally made a decision to demolish the fence and demanded the immediately stop the construction in the water-protection area instead of the mini-park.

Elena Dzaganiya, the chair of the initiative group, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that people were so outraged by this construction that gathered to rallies almost daily. According to her story, one of the rallies was attended by Igor Vasiliev, an assistant of the State Duma MP Sergey Obukhov, who promised to report about what is happening to the Parliament.

Currently, residents are collecting signatures against the construction of the multipurpose complex, claiming that the only mini-park in the neighbourhood will be destroyed; thereby violating their right to a healthy environment.
