Dagestan: head of Derbent District placed under home arrest

Today, Kurban Kurbanov, the Head of the Administration of the Derbent District of Dagestan, who is suspected of abuse of power, was placed under home arrest for two months. Thus, the Sovietskiy District Court of Makhachkala has satisfied the defence's motion to apply a more lenient freedom restriction measure to Kurbanov, said Aslan Shirinov, his advocate.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Kurban Kurbanov was detained on October 1. He is accused of making unlawful decisions on allocating land plots, being in republic's ownership, for private farming.

"He's not a dangerous criminal to take him into custody; moreover, he needs to be under permanent doctor's supervision. Apparently, the court took these arguments into account and decided to put Kurbanov under home arrest for two months," said Aslan Shirinov, stressing that he was still not happy with the decision of the court and would soon challenge it.
