Mamedov's relatives assert that Azerbaijani Penitentiary Service refuses to disclose his whereabouts

Family members and advocate of Ilgar Mamedov, the leader of the civil movement "Republican Alternative" (ReAl), sentenced on charges of riots in Ismailly, cannot get information about his whereabouts since September 25.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 24, the Sheki Court of Appeal upheld the decision of the court of first instance against Ilgar Mamedov and Tofiq Yagublu. On September 25, both oppositionists were transported to Baku.

According to the unofficial information, available to oppositionist's wife Vafa Mamedova and his advocate, Ilgar Mamedov was transferred from Sheki to the Baku SIZO (pre-trial prison) No. 3 in the village of Shuvelan.

According to Khalid Bagirov, an advocate of Ilgar Mamedov, the Penitentiary Service violates the rights of his client, when prohibits visits of his advocates and family members.

On October 4, Tofiq Yagublu called home and told his family members that he was transferred to serve his sentence in the penal colony No. 13 in the village of Puta, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by Nigyar Yagublu, a daughter of Tofiq Yagublu.

Meanwhile, the daughter of the opposition leader has pointed out that the mentioned penal colony is one of the colonies most remote from Baku, though the law provides that the convicted person is to serve sentence in a penitentiary institution close to the place of his or her permanent residence.

Members of the civil movement "ReAl" believe that the Azerbaijani authorities wipe off old scores with their political opponents. The NGO demands the immediate restoration of the rights of Ilgar Mamedov.
