Moscow hosts pickets in support of Azerbaijani political prisoners

On Thursday, Moscow hosts pickets in support of political prisoners in Azerbaijan, organized by the Committee "Civil Assistance".

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the "list of political prisoners in Azerbaijan" with the names of 97 persons was disseminated on August 8. After its appearance, human rights defender Intigam Aliev was arrested, and public activists recognized him as one more political prisoner. Thus, the total number of political prisoners reached 98 persons.

The protest action took place in front of the building of the Embassy of Azerbaijan located in Leontiev Lane. Security measures were not enhanced. Svetlana Gannushkina appeared in front of the building of the Embassy of Azerbaijan together with three men, one of whom was holding in his hands a poster reading: "Freedom for Leila and Arif Yunus".

Let us remind you that at present, Leyla Yunus, the Director of "Institute for Peace and Democracy" (IPD), is being kept under arrest. She and her husband Arif Yunus, who worked at the IPD and was engaged in solving problems of conflictology and migration, are charged with a number of articles, including "Treason".

On September 23, the European Parliament began the process of selecting nominees for the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. Leyla Yunus became one of seven official candidates for the Sakharov Prize.
