"Levada-Centre": amid optimism about the situation in Northern Caucasus, Russians still view it as strained
The population of Russia continues being optimistic about the situation in Northern Caucasus and concerning the future of the region, maintaining the trend that emerged this March – these are the data of the latest poll conducted by the "Levada-Centre". Sociologists continue linking this trend with the events in Ukraine.
According to the poll, conducted by the "Levada-Centre" on September 19-22, 41% of respondents estimated the situation in Northern Caucasus as favourable (in January, the figure was only 18%); while 19% of them expect that in the future the situation will improve (against 9% in January).
Lev Gudkov, the Director of the "Levada-Centre", in his comment on these data, linked the trend with the events in Ukraine, which burst out right in March this year.
However, as one of the options, the expert found it possible that the actual decrease in the number of terror acts in Northern Caucasus could be another factor affecting peoples' moods.
Still, Mr Gudkov has remarked that 40% of the respondents continue assessing the situation in the country's south as tense.
