Former residents of central Yerevan demand new flats from Armenian Government

On October 16, in Yerevan, former residents of the central streets, namely: Yekmalyan, Byuzand, and Anrapetutyan Streets, blocked a street in the centre of the Armenian capital and demanded a meeting with Armenian Prime Minister Ovik Abramyan. According to the protesters, the government is to provide them with housing facilities.

The protesters have emphasized that their houses in the city centre came under the Law "On alienation of property for the needs of society and the state" and that their houses were demolished to vacate land plots for construction of new buildings in accordance with the Law. As a result, according to the protestors, they still live in rented apartments and wait for the housing promised to them.

The place of the protest action was approached by policemen, including fighters of the police unit division "Red Berets", who pushed the protesters from the roadway.

Later, the protesting city residents were approached by Alexander Kazaryan, the head of the Department to meet citizens and accept citizens' complaints of the Government of Armenia. He has listened to the protestors' demands and promised that the Prime Minister will meet them. The official has also suggested that the city residents should send their complaint in writing to the Prime Minister.
