In Greece, court refuses to extradite Data Akhalaya to Georgia

In Greece, the court has pronounced the decision to refuse extradition to Georgia of Data Akhalaya, the former Chief of the Department of Constitutional Security of the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA). This was reported on October 16 by advocate Irakli Zakareishvili.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that at the end of 2012, Data Akhalaya and three of his former employees were charged with abuse of power and illegal deprivation of liberty. In March 2014, in Georgia, the court sentenced each of them in absentia to three years and nine months of imprisonment. Data Akhalaya is involved in the case of the so-called "Navtlug" special operation as a defendant accused of intentional murder.

In Greece, the court has dismissed the demand of the Georgian authorities to extradite Data Akhalaya to Georgia, his advocate Irakli Zakareishvili reports.

"Today, the Greek court has released Data Akhalaya, since in Georgia, he is under political persecution, and the court has released him from the courtroom during the consideration of the case on extradition," the "Georgia-Online" quoted the advocate as stating.
