EP calls on Russia's MoJ to withdraw its claim on dissolution of "Memorial"

MPs of the European Parliament (EP) have adopted a resolution calling on the Russian Ministry of Justice (MoJ) to withdraw from the Supreme Court its claim for dissolution of the Russian "Memorial".

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the Russian Supreme Court had scheduled for November 13 the consideration of the claim filed by the Russian MoJ to dissolve the Russian "Memorial". The rights defenders are going to appeal to the Constitutional Court, since they believe that the MoJ restricts the rights of the citizens to form associations.

The European Parliament's resolution with the call to the Russian MoJ to withdraw its claim for dissolution of the Russian "Memorial" has been approved by a majority vote at a plenary session in Strasbourg. The MPs asked to cease the harassment of the organization "Memorial", the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial" and also "to ensure their right to carry out legitimate activities under all circumstances without outside interference."

Moreover, the MPs have found that "the Law on foreign agents is a violation of the obligations of the Russian Federation to the Council of Europe (CE) and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE)."

Earlier, the Russian MoJ has pointed out that the claim for dissolution of the "Memorial" was filed to the court after two preliminary warnings.
