In Georgia, Azerbaijani students stand against closure of mosque in Mokhe village

Members of the Association of Azerbaijani students have held namaz (prayer) in front of the State Chancellery of Georgia to protest against the authorities' decision to close the mosque in the village of Mokhe of the Adigeni District.

Let us remind you that in the village of Mokhe, the building, which, according to the people professing Islam, used to be a mosque, is expected to undergo reconstruction. Christians living in the village state that a church used to be at the place. Then, it was destroyed, and Muslims built a mosque from parts of the destroyed building. To avoid conflict, the authorities have made a decision to build a house of culture at the place in question. This was explained by Irakli Garibashvili, the Prime Minister of Georgia.

The protest action against the reconstruction of the building took place on October 28. 10 persons committed namaz in front of the State Chancellery.

"Our action is an action of solidarity with Muslims of Georgia, in particular, with those of them who live in the village of Mokhe of the Adigeni District. The authorities systematically discriminate Muslims of Georgia," stated Samira Ismaillova, the Chair of the Association of Azerbaijani Students in Georgia, in her interview to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
