Dagestani court announces verdict in case on "honour killing" in Nechaevka

The Kizilyurt District Court of Dagestan has sentenced Kasum Magomedov, found guilty of the murder of his niece, to seven years in a high-security penal colony. The defendant has pleaded guilty.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that 22-year-old Maryam Magomedova was killed in the village of Nechaevka of the Kizilyurt District of Dagestan in August 2010. The mother of the killed young woman held Kasum Magomedov, the uncle of Maryam Magomedova, guilty of the murder, since he believed that his niece behaved unworthily and disgraced the family. In November 2012, the trial in the case against Kasum Magomedov was started, and in April 2013, the trial was completed with the verdict of acquittal. The consideration of the appeal against the verdict was started on September 30, 2013. The defendant initially denied his guilt; however, on May 22, 2014, he confessed that he committed the murder by negligence, being in the state of "confusion of conscience".

On October 21, the Court announced the verdict: the defendant was sentenced to seven years in a high-security penal colony. This was reported by Salimat Kadyrova, an advocate of the victim party.

"The experts have concluded that the defendant was not in a state of temporary insanity. We have not yet decided whether we will appeal against the Court's decision," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by advocate Akif Beibutov, who defended the interests of defendant Kasum Magomedov.
