In Makhachkala, eight persons go on hunger strike demanding resignation of Dagestani leader
Today, in Makhachkala, eight members of NGOs from different districts of Dagestan have declared a hunger strike demanding the resignation of the Dagestani leader Ramazan Abdulatipov. Besides, the protestors also spoke against corruption.
The decision to hold the protests was made at the enlarged meeting of NGO members and heads of the boards of the local branches of the "Spravedlivaya Rossiya" (Fair Russia) Party held on September 27. This was told to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by Kazikhan Kurbanov, one of the hunger-strikers, a member of the Anti-Corruption Council of the Tabasaran District.
According to Kazikhan Kurbanov, at present, the protest action involves eight persons, including two women. "We understand that we cannot make Ramazan Gadjimuradovich resign. Our aim is to identify the problems that have accumulated in the republic. I believe the most important problem is that the people are deprived of voting. Besides the fact that we are not entitled to choose the head of the region, now, in fact, even the municipal heads are appointed by authorities. This is a violation of our constitutional rights," the hunger-striker has noted.
