KBR's Public Chamber draws power agents' attention to corruption in municipalities

On October 31, the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR) hosted a scientific-practical conference to discuss the problem of corruption in the bodies of state power, organized by the Public Chamber of the KBR.

Despite the measures taken by the state, "corruption remains one of the key problems that destroys the foundations of the society", Lyudmila Fedchenko, co-chair of the Public Chamber, said during the conference.

She drew the audience's attention to corruption in municipalities and noted that since the adoption of the Federal Law No. 131 "On General Principles of Local Self-Government in the Russian   Federation", 248 heads of municipal formations were brought to criminal responsibility.

Different regions of Russia, including the KBR, fail to give due attention to officials' participation in businesses and legalization of their illegal proceeds, said Anusya Tselousova, the chair of the commission on public control over the work of power bodies.

In her opinion, for the fight on corruption "we must have a full-fledged civil society, independent public institutions and involvement of mass media."
