In Nakhichevan, court closes case on beating of rights defender Ilgar Nasibov

Farid Askerov accused of beating the rights defender Ilgar Nasibov has admitted his guilt and repented of his deed. Ilgar Nasibov has stated that he has no claims against Farid Askerov; and the court has stopped the criminal case.

According to Ilgar Nasibov, at trial, Farid Askerov has said that he was in a state of alcoholic intoxication and that he did not control his actions. As for the counter-complaint filed by Farid Askerov against Ilgar Nasibov, then, according to the human rights activist, the young man has declared that he abandons it.

Ilgar Nasibov has emphasized that he and Yashar Askerov, the Farid's father, a member of the opposition Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), have been friends for many years.

The consideration of the counter-complaint filed by Farid Askerov against Ilgar Nasibov is scheduled for November 5. According to the law enforcement authorities, Ilgar Nasibov inflicted bodily harm to Farid Askerov.

"Given the fact that today, Farid Askerov has pleaded guilty and said he has no claims against me, tomorrow, the court will make a similar decision," Ilgar Nasibov believes.

According to a Baku advocate, the court's decision against Farid Askerov was too humane.

"Even in case if Ilgar Nasibov has forgiven the man who had beaten him, the court had to take this fact into account as a mitigating circumstance; however, the court should not exempt Farid Askerov from liability," the advocate has explained. He has added that he treats the act of Ilgar Nasibov as noble act.
