Azerbaijan: advocate Khalid Bagirov removed from defending Leyla Yunus
The lawyer Khalid Bagirov has been removed from defending the rights of the arrested rights defender Leyla Yunus. This investigator's decision is aimed at weakening her defence, said the lawyer. On October 29, another Leyla Yunus' advocate Djavad Djavadov (Djavadly) also reported his removal from her defence, since he was attracted as a witness in the case.
On Wednesday, Khalid Bagirov was not allowed to meet Leyla Yunus at the Baku SIZO (pre-trial prison) No. 1. According to Bagirov, he was not explained the reasons for the ban.
The lawyer said that on November 6 he would try to find out at the General Prosecutor's Office why he was removed from defending the rights of Leyla Yunus.
"A threat of removal is looming over another Leyla Yunus' advocate – Alaif Gasanov, since they want to prosecute him under a trumped lawsuit of Leyla's cellmate," said Bagirov.
Let us remind you that the advocates of the rights defender have repeatedly reported about the oppression of their client at the SIZO and her health problems; and on September 24 five advocates of Leyla Yunus stated that she had been beaten up by a SIZO employee.
