Hunger strike demanding resignation of Dagestani leader stopped in Makhachkala

Six hunger-strikers from Makhachkala, Dagestan, who demanded resignation of Ramazan Abdulatipov, the head of the republic, have stopped their protest action for health reasons. Officials from Abdulatipov's administration stated that Dagestani authorities have started to implement the agreements earlier reached with the hunger-strikers.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the hunger strike in a house in a Makhachkala outskirt started on October 29. The protesters assert that they tried to draw attention to the problem of corruption in the republic and achieve resignation of Ramazan Abdulatipov.

The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was informed about the end of the protest action by Zurab Kurbanov, one of the hunger strikers.

"Earlier Magomed Guseinov was hospitalized; then Mamatkhan Baisultanov. Today, Mamatkhan again felt bad; his blood tension went up to nearly 200; therefore, we decided to suspend the action because of our physical inability to continue," said Kurbanov, noting that Mamatkhan Baisultanov received medical help and was taken home.

Currently, all the protesters are at home. "We haven't received a document signed by authority officials and containing the guarantees of fulfilment of their commitments, but we couldn't wait any longer. Our representatives are in contact with the republic's leadership; according to them, a draft document is being preparing to be presented on Thursday," said Kurbanov.
