KChR's court extends arrest of Ionov accused of promoting terrorism

The court has rejected the motion lodged by the defence of Ruslan Ionov, a resident of the Karachay-Cherkessian Republic (KChR), accused of helping terrorists, and asking to soften his freedom restraint measure. The court has extended his arrest by two months.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Ruslan Ionov was detained on July 12. His relatives and advocate stated violations at his detention; and Ionov himself told the court that he was tortured with electric current. On September 16, Ionov was charged with promoting terrorism.

The consideration of investigators' request to extend Ionov's arrest was held today by the Cherkessk City Court. The prosecutor has supported the motion to extend the custody until January 13, 2015.

In the opinion of Elvira Aidinova, Ionov's advocate, the above request was unjustified; and Ionov's custody can be replaced by a softer measure, not associated with the arrest.

The lawyer Aidinova told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that over the last two months not a single investigative action was undertaken in relation to her client.
