ReAl leader Ilgar Mamedov appeals against his verdict at the SC of Azerbaijan
Ilgar Mamedov, the leader of the Civil Movement "Republican Alternative" (ReAl) has challenged his conviction to the Supreme Court (SC) of Azerbaijan. His defence insists on the abolition of decisions of lower courts in Mamedov's case and his acquittal. However, Mamedov refused to petition for clemency, said his colleague Azer Gasymly.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Ilgar Mamedov was accused of organizing mass riots on January 23-24, 2013, in the city of Ismailly. Despite the criticism from the international community and human rights organizations, the activist was sentenced to seven years in prison.
The Mamedov's cassation complained was presented to the SC by his advocate Fuad Agaev.
"We believe that Ilgar Mamedov's innocence was fully proved at the trial. The investigators' version was completely ruined by numerous testimonies and video materials. Ilgar Mamedov was present, for a short time, for about an hour, in the city of Ismayilly on the following day after the start of the unrest. When he was there, the city was calm, which was confirmed by the head of the Ismayilly District in his interview to TV channels. However, the courts had passed completely different decisions," Agaev told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
According to his story, the examination of the appeal complaint should start within three months from the date of its registration at the SC.
