"Memorial" changes its Charter to suit MoJ

The Russian Historical, Educational and Human Rights Society "Memorial" is preparing documents for sending to the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) on amendments made in its Charter, which did not satisfy the MoJ earlier, said Arseniy Roginskiy, the leader of the Society. The amendments in the Charter were made on November 22.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the Russia's Supreme Court (SC) postponed till December 17 the consideration of the claim of the MoJ on liquidation of the "Memorial".

According to Mr Roginskiy, on Saturday, the conference adopted a new Charter of the "International 'Memorial'" and "Russian 'Memorial'". In accordance with the changes made in the Charter, the "International 'Memorial'" is now a union of organizations, while the "Russian 'Memorial'" is a union of individuals.

In the near future, the Society plans to draw up the respective documents to inform the MoJ about the changes.

The new Charter settles the problem of the all-Russian status of the organization, which had caused the dissatisfaction of the MoJ, said Oleg Orlov, a member of the Board of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial".

Let us remind you that on October 23 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) adopted a resolution calling on the MoJ of Russia to withdraw the lawsuit on liquidation of the Society "Memorial" from the Russian SC.

Earlier, Mikhail Fedotov the head of the Presidential Council on Human Rights, and Thorbjorn Jagland, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, spoke against the closure of the Russian "Memorial".
