Georgia demands to convene UN Security Council because of Russian-Abkhaz treaty

Georgia has demanded to convene the UN Security Council on the fact of signing the Russian-Abkhaz alliance and strategic partnership treaty.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the treaty has been signed today in Sochi by Russian President Vladimir Putin and President of Abkhazia Raul Khajimba.

The demand to hold a sitting of the UN Security Council on the issue of the treaty was announced today by Tamar Beruchashvili, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Georgia, at a special briefing in Tbilisi.

Today, the Minister was supported by the Georgian opposition party "United National Movement", which also demanded to hold a special sitting of the UN Security Council. According to the party's statement, Georgia must join the Western sanctions against Russia and stop the Karasin-Abashidze meetings, the "Georgia-Online" reports.

Earlier, the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) called the draft of the Russian-Abkhaz treaty a threat to Georgian-Russian relations; and the Parliament adopted a statement "On Russia's attempt to annex Abkhazia."
