Georgia's GPO accuses Saakashvili under "Girgvliani's case"
The General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) has presented a new charge to ex-President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili concerning the murder case of Sandro Girgvliani, an employee of the "United Bank of Georgia". The former country leader is accused of falsifying the criminal case.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in October 2012 a re-investigation into Girgvliani's murder was launched. According to investigators, apart from earlier established persons, a number of high-ranking officials were also involved in the murder. On August 11, 2014, Oleg Melnikov, the former deputy head of the Department of Constitutional Security of the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), made a confession and claimed that ex-President Mikhail Saakashvili was involved in the plan to reduce the public resonance surrounding the case. On October 20, the Tbilisi City Court has announced the verdict in the case on the murder of Sandro Girgvliani. Vano Merabishvili, the former Prime Minister and the former Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia, involved in the case as a defendant, accused of abuse of power, was sentenced to three years of imprisonment.
Today, the GPO has passed a resolution accusing the former President Mikhail Saakashvili of committing a crime against Girgvliani. As stated by the GPO, Saakashvili, by "maliciously abusing his official position," took part in the falsification of the criminal case together with the ex-Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili, former head of the Department of Constitutional Security Data Akhalaya and other officials, the "Interfax" reports.
