Aibga residents complain about travel problems due to Russia-Abkhazia territorial dispute

Because of the territorial dispute of Russia and Abkhazia on the territorial affiliation of the village of Aibga, its villagers have problems with entry and exit, power shortages, absence of roads and health care services, said Olga Dobshinskaya, who was born in the left-bank part of the village and is now the head of it.

After the collapse of the USSR, the village of Aibga, located near the Psou River, was divided into two parts by the border between Russia and Abkhazia, namely, the Adler District of Sochi, Krasnodar Territory (left-bank part), and the Gagra District of Abkhazia (right-bank part), respectively.

"The right-bank part of the village has a Russian border post, the left-bank part – an Abkhazian one. In order to get home, my family and our guests have to take permission from the head of the frontier unit. On what basis – we don't know. All this has complicated the life of the left bank villagers," said Olga Dobshinskaya.

The territorial disputes with Abkhazia have led to power shortages, absence of roads and a medical centre, villagers complain. According to Olga Dobshinskaya, a few persons of capable age died in the village because of absence of adequate and timely medical care.

She stressed that young people "leave Aibga, because there is no school, no living conditions and no jobs there."
