Stavropol: advocate of Magomed Aliev tells court about grave condition of his client

The advocate of Magomed Aliev, a native of Dagestan, suspected of promoting terrorism, has informed the court today about the grave condition of his client and asked the court to consider the appeal lodged against Aliev's arrest in his absence.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Magomed Aliev, a 22-year-old student of the Stavropol Medical Academy, was detained on November 21 in Moscow. On November 24, a Stavropol court put him into custody; and on November 27 the young man was taken to a local hospital in grave condition. Doctors removed a pen that had penetrated into his eye and hurt the brain; they also stated damages of his internal organs.

According to the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service (known as FSIN), Aliev tried to commit suicide; however, his relatives believe that law enforcers tried to kill Aliev. Relatives have applied to the prosecutor's office and investigating authorities asking to institute a criminal case on causing grievous bodily harm to him. In her turn, Olga Kamilova, the Aliev's advocate, lodged an appeal complaint against the ruling to place him into custody.

"Today, I provided the appeal court with a certificate that Magomed Aliev cannot appear at the session, as he is in the intensive care unit, and filed a motion asking to consider the complaint in his absence," Olga Kamilova told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

The pre-inquiry check of the information about causing grievous bodily harm continues. The decision to institute criminal proceedings, or to refuse to do it, is still pending, said Ekaterina Danilova, the Senior Assistant to the Head of the Investigating Department for the StavropolTerritory of the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF).
