Azerbaijani rights defender Leyla Yunus nominated for "To Women for Courage"
The Azerbaijani rights defender Leyla Yunus, placed in custody on charges of treason, has been nominated for the International Award "To Women for Courage".
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Leyla Yunus, the Director of the Institute of Peace and Democracy (IPD), and her husband Arif Yunus are accused of economic crimes and treason. The spouses reject the guilt, while the prosecution of them has been sharply criticized by international organizations. Leyla's health is of great concern of rights defenders and friends.
The Award "To Women for Courage" is to decorate and celebrate women for bravery and leadership features, displayed in the struggle for social justice and respect of human rights. It was established in 2007 by the then US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
Leyla Yunus has been nominated; and the nomination process continues, said the US diplomatic service.
The laureates will be announced at the annual awarding ceremony in March 2015, as they explained to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent at the US Embassy in Azerbaijan.
