Journalist from Nalchik Tsagoev is laureate of Sakharov Award
This year, Igor Tsagoev, a journalist from Nalchik, has been awarded the Andrei Sakharov Prize "For Journalism as a Deed". The list of finalists comprised journalists from Volgograd and Makhachkala.
The awarding ceremony took place on December 15. Publications of 12 journalists were selected for the final round, including materials by Larissa Sheremet in the newspaper "Volgogradskaya Pravda", and by Zakir Magomedov on the website "Daptar", says the website of the Glasnost Defence Foundation.
The jury chose the publication by Tsagoev "A Man's Fate" published in the magazine "Nevolya" (Captivity), the RIA "Kabardino-Balkaria" reports. The article describes Tsagoev's own criminal case.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Tsagoev was detained in May 2013 on suspicion of a robbery committed in 2000. In September 2013, the court reclassified his case from robbery, where the journalists could face up to 12 years in prison, into inflicting minor bodily harm, stopped the prosecution against him for the lapse of time and released him in the courtroom.
Igor Tsagoev has been working in media since 1998. During this time, he received 45 various awards, including the Sakharov Award.
