Private house in Sochi slides into the pit dug for residential complex "Kurortny"

On June 18, in the course of construction works, several dozens of cubic meters of soil slid into the pit, prepared for the construction of the residential complex "Kurortny". The collapsed soil was bearing the private house of the Vernichenko family. As of June 21, the house had entirely slipped into the pit.

The house was the home for 10 members of the Vernichenko family; none of them was hurt, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

"The ground sliding began about a year ago, after they began the construction of the residential complex 'Kurortny'," Svetlana Vernichenko, the hostess of the two-storey house, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent. "We have repeatedly asked to stop the works, which kept triggering the landslide. We wrote to all authorities, but no action was taken. Now, we are street-residents," said Svetlana.

A new housing will be purchased for the Vernichenko family, Yuri Oganyan, Director General of the residential complex "Kurortny", has assured the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

On June 20, local residents held a gathering at the site of the collapsed dwelling house and demanded to "take measures to stop the corruption-based development of the resort-city." "Our city is a landslide-prone city; and new constructions are posing a risk to city residents," Natalia Solovyova, a local resident, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

  • Lawyers doubt prospect of bills banning religious clothes

The bills that intend to ban wearing religious clothing, including niqabs, in public places are causing a split in the society, which is especially negative amid the special military operation (SMO) in Ukraine. Religious clothes are not widespread in the country, this issue is not relevant, therefore the bills to ban them will not be adopted, lawyers believe.
