Five Azerbaijani citizens suspected of involvement in IS

The Ministry of National Security (MNS) of Azerbaijan has conducted a detention operation. All the suspects are taken into custody by the court's decision.

In the course of the special operation, Namig Guliev, Talekh Akhmedov, Khalid Gadjiverdiev, Elvin Askerov, and Anar Makhmudov were detained.

According to investigators, in 2012-2015, the detainees were involved in the combat actions in the territories of Iraq and Syria in the ranks of illegal armed formations (IAFs), including the "Islamic State" (IS, earlier ISIL, recognized as a terrorist organization in many countries, including Russia, note of the "Caucasian Knot"), the "vesti.az" reports.

The Chief Investigating Department of the Azerbaijani Ministry of National Security is conducting an investigation under Articles "Creation of illegal armed formations abroad," "Terrorism abroad", "Organization of a criminal community abroad", and "Inciting religious hatred", the "contact.az" reports. The maximum punishment stipulated under the above articles is life imprisonment.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in September, the Ministry of National Security of Azerbaijan reported on the detention and arrest of Shirkhan Khasaily, Rovshan Mikailov, Elshan Adilov, Vugar Gadjiev, and Azer Eyubov, who were charged with involvement in the combat actions in Iraq and Syria and in the activities of the "Islamic State". According to investigators, in 2013-2015, all of the detainees were involved in the activities of the IAFs on the territories of Syria and Iraq, including the activities of the "Islamic State".
