Court arrests activist Gevorg Safaryan for two months

In Armenia, Gevorg Safaryan, a member of the oppositional "Constituent Parliament", who has been earlier detained on suspicion of using violence against a public officer, is arrested for two months by the court decision. This was reported by Tigran Airapetyan, an advocate of Gevorg Safaryan. In case if the activist's guilt is proved, he faces up to five years of imprisonment.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that at the New Year's night, activist Gevorg Safaryan was arrested after a conflict with the police in Freedom Square. He was detained on January 1.

Gevorg Safaryan, a member of the "Constituent Parliament", is charged under Part 1 of Article 316 of the Criminal Code of Armenia "Use of violence against a public official". This was told to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by Tigran Airapetyan, the advocate of Gevorg Safaryan.

The advocate has also stated that at the courtroom, the activist announced the start of his hunger strike and demanded to place him in a one-man cell.

Earlier, Gevorg Safaryan was arrested in April 2015, and then he was charged with plotting mass riots.

Tigran Airapetyan has explained the arrest of his client by the fact that Gevorg Safaryan is, according to investigators, involved in the case of the plotting of mass riots and that he may be able to obstruct the investigation into the criminal case opened on the fact of the use of violence.
