Three residents of Dagestan file lawsuit against republic's government

A representative of residents of the village of Mekhelta of the Gumbetov District of Dagestan, who lost their houses as a result of landslide in 2006, appealed to the court with a request for compensation from the republic's budget.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the Mekhelta villagers have been trying for ten years to get compensation for the houses destroyed by landslides. In September 2014, the authorities of Dagestan claimed shortage of funds for compensation.

On May 19, 2006, the villages of Mekhelta, Kilyatli, Chirkata, and Igali of the Gumbetov District of Dagestan were hit by heavy rains with large-scale hail, which caused landslides. 185 people living in 32 households were recognized as victims of the disaster.

On June 15, the claim for compensation was considered by the Tver District Court of Moscow. The Court dismissed it and pointed out that the Russian Ministry of Finance was not a proper defendant in the case.

On September 2, Sapiyat Magomedova, a representative of the victims, filed a lawsuit to the Soviet District Court of Makhachkala to recognize unlawful the refusal of the Government of the Republic of Dagestan to allocate compensations.
