Ukraine’s Public Prosecutor General promises not to extradite Saakashvili to Georgia

Mikhail Saakashvili will not be arrested for breaking through the border cordon, Yuri Lutsenko, the Public Prosecutor General of Ukraine has stated today.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 10, Mikhail Saakashvili, who was deprived of his Ukrainian citizenship on July 26, and his supporters broke through the cordon near the Shegini checkpoint on the Polish-Ukrainian border. According to the "Interfax", 11 policemen and five border guards received traumas during the incident.

According to Mr Lutsenko, Mikhail Saakashvili will not be extradited from Ukraine.

"As the Public Prosecutor General of Ukraine, I clearly tell you: Saakashvili will not be arrested under this case, and Saakashvili cannot be extradited from this country, as long as he has a permanent residence certificate or other documents that he has presented," Mr Lutsenko has declared.

At the same time, he has added that "the people who smuggled Saakashvili across the border will have problems under the criminal case."
