Georgia's SC obliges MIA to pay 5700 US dollars to LGBT activists

The Supreme Court (SC) has appointed a compensation of 15,500 laris to be paid by the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) to about 20 LGBT activists, who suffered during a rally in Tbilisi in 2013.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in May 2013, opponents of the rally in support of sexual minorities in Tbilisi attacked a bus with LGBT activists. As a result of mass clashed, 28 people suffered.

The defendants in the case were four men, including Yotam (Irakli) Basilaya, an abbot of the women's monastery, and Antimoz Bichinashvili, Archimandrite of the Holy Trinity Church. In October 2015, the court acquitted them.

"We are confident that after this SC's decision, law enforcement bodies will take more efforts to protect our rights," the "Interfax" quotes one of the victims as saying.

Earlier, the "Caucasian Knot" reported that on May 12, 2015, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) ordered Georgia to pay 33,500 euros to the LGBT activists, who suffered in Tbilisi in clashes during the action against homophobia in May 2012.
