Investigators voice cause of BASE jumper’s death in KBR

According to preliminary data, Alexander Pogrebov’s parachute failed to open during his jump in the mountains of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR), an investigator has stated today.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on December 1, in KBR mountains a BASE jumper disappeared. Before darkness on that day, rescuers could not find him. On December 2, the search was resumed; on December 3, Pogrebov's friends reported his death.

Alexander Pogrebov was one of the four BASE jumpers, who were detained on August 20, 2014, after repainting the star on the spire of a skyscraper in Kotelnicheskaya Embankment into the colours of the Ukrainian flag.

"According to the preliminary version, Alexander Pogrebov perished as a result of his parachute’s failure to open," the TASS quotes the spokesman Investigating Department for the KBR of the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF).

He has added that "after the fall, the victim rolled down the slope into the river; its flow dragged him under the ice, where his body was found by rescuers."

Alexander Pogrebov is the second figurant in the case about repainting the star on the above Moscow skyscraper, who died while making a parachute jump. In August this year, the “Moskovsky Komsomolets” reported the death of Alexei Shirokozhukhov in the Alps.
