Armenian official accused of embezzling social assistance to war veterans

Paruir Sargsyan, the headman of the Armenian village of Zartonk, is accused of embezzling money intended for participants in the combat actions in Nagorno-Karabakh in April 2016.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 13, after a conflict involving opponents of Paruir Sargsyan, the headman of the Zartonk village, and his supporters, the village headman filed a letter of resignation.

Residents of the village demand the resignation of Paruir Sargsyan, since he has been heading the community for 23 years already. After a conflict with shooting, six injured persons were taken to the hospital.

According to investigators, Paruir Sargsyan got 1.1 million drams (about 2250 US dollars) from the budget to provide social assistance to war veterans, but only five of them received financial assistance totally amounting to 300,000 drams (620 US dollars).

The investigators also suggest that Paruir Sargsyan embezzled 400,000 US dollars transferred by the charitable organization "ART" for medical treatment of two persons wounded in the combat actions in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Let us remind you that in April 2016, there was an escalation of the Karabakh conflict. After that, the parties to the conflict announced a truce, but it did not stop their confrontation.
