Armenia joins the UN Convention against torture

Armenia has joined the UN Convention against Torture, reports today Grisha Grigorian, head of information and public relations section of "Human Rights Activist. "This has become possible following the ratification by the Armenian National Assembly of the Optional Protocol to the "Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment or Punishment."

The UN Convention Optional Protocol was adopted on December 18, 2002 and will come into force on June 22, 2006. The mechanisms of precluding torture must be used without hindrance in all places of confinement and in psychiatric hospitals, reports the Armenian News.
