Abortive meeting of MSC in North Ossetia

No concrete constructive results have been reached in the course of the second round of the 51st meeting of the Mixed Supervisory Commission on settling the Georgia-Ossetia conflict. This has been reported by the Commission co-chairmen upon the completion of the negotiations.

During the meeting, a program of economic rehabilitation of South Ossetia, which is a key issue in the conflict settlement, has been discussed. Despite the fact that no compromise has been reached, the parties have expressed their wish to "continue the dialogue."

The parties have stated that, during the negotiations, the Georgian part of the MSC insisted on changing the commission format, proposing a main bi-lateral format with the participation of intermediaries, such as USA, European Union and Russia. In the opinion of Antadze, the participation of Russia in the conflict, especially in the recent period, "plays a rather negative role."

Meanwhile, as Boris Chochiyev, co-chairman of the MSC representing South Ossetia, has stated, the decision on changing the format of the commission and including new intermediaries into the negotiation process "is not part of the commission powers."
