Actions of protest of Azerbaijanis in Iran continue

As has been reported to the correspondent of the "Caucasian Knot" in the Baku office of the Movement for National Awakening of South Azerbaijan, actions of protest of Azerbaijanis in Iran, which started on May 22 in connection with the publication in the "Iran" newspaper of insulting caricatures of Azerbaijanis, continue. The attempts of the Iranian authorities to pacify tens of thousands of people using the army and security forces yield no results. The protestants would not calm down despite scores of deaths, hundreds of arrests of demonstrators and a large number of wounded. Moreover, the protests gradually spread to other towns.

On May 24, the troops opened fire on demonstrators in the city of Merand. 6 people were killed, about a hundred were wounded. Similar events took place in the city of Urmiya where the troops also opened fire on the demonstrators killing two and wounding scores of people, notes the MNASA. About 20,000 people went out into the streets in the settlement of Goshachai, and the action still continues. Meanwhile, Alirza Amanbeili and Akhmed Nazari (both originating from Iran) were arrested for insulting the Iranian flag by publicly burning it on May 23 in front of the Iranian embassy in Baku. This has been reported in the message of the Azerbaijan MIA press-service.

For reference, the actions of protest of Azerbaijanis in Iran started after offensive publications in the official newspaper "Iran" where Azerbaijanis were shown as cockroaches.
