"Memorial" demands restoration of postal communication with Georgia in the judicial order

On October 17, 2006, a complaint was lodged to the Syktyvkar City Court on the decisions of the Federal State Unitary Enterprise (FSUE) "Pochta Rossii" (Russian Postal Service), by which the international postal exchange with Georgia had been suspended.

With a reference to the norms of Russian legislation and acts of the Universal Postal Union, Ernest Mezak, member of the Board of the Komi Human Rights Commission (KHRC) "Memorial," applied to the court to oblige the Federal State Enterprise to resume the postal communication with the disfavoured country. In particular, the application states that the mandatory for Russia acts of the Universal Postal Union do not vest national postal operators with any rights to suspend, on their own initiative, postal exchange with any country where the Statute of the Union is recognized, the message of the KHRC "Memorial" asserts.

The postal exchange of the Russian Federation with Georgia was suspended on October 2, 2006.
