European Parliament signed resolution on South Ossetia

On October 27, the European Parliament deputies adopted a joint resolution on South Ossetia calling both parties to reach a peaceful settlement of the conflict.

The European Parliament supported the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia and called out Russia to respect its sovereignty within the borders recognized at the international level. Also the European MPs called the parties to refrain from provocative and aggressive actions and declarations, which may contribute to aggravation of the situation.

The resolution signed by the European Parliament runs as follows: "The deputies of the European Parliament are harshly condemning the unilateral attempts to gain independence by the regions of Georgia - Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The Parliament appeals to the government of the Russian Federation to abstain from supporting such attempts, and to support instead the multilateral efforts to settle the conflicts in its neighbourhood."

Also, the European Parliament has advised South Ossetia to refrain from holding an independence referendum and called out the parties to sign a joint document on non-application of force.
