Georgian authorities report granting housing for more 1000 refugee families

In 2019, more 1000 families of internally displaced persons (IDPs) were allocated houses in Georgian villages under the "House in Village" programme.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that IDPs have been conducting protest actions in Tbilisi since September. They demand from the authorities to allocate housing for them. On September 21, security guards locked ten female participants of the rally for the weekend in a lobby of the Georgian Ministry of IDPs from the occupied territories, Labour, Health, and Social Affairs. At the building of the Ministry, the IDPs organized a sleeping corner for themselves, where they stay on duty around the clock and replace each other in shifts.

1050 families of IDPs were granted houses in villages under the "House in Village" programme, the "Sputnik-Georgia" reports with reference to a report of the IDPs and Eco-migrants Agency.

The project "House in Village" was launched in 2013, and its action was extended for 2020. Under the programme, IDP families choose houses in villages, and the state allocates money for them to purchase the house they have chosen. The amount to be allocated depends on the number of family members, the "Georgia-Online" reports on December 29.

According to the Georgian authorities, since 2012, more than 16,000 IDP families have been granted housing. In total, Georgia registered more than 267,000 IDPs from Abkhazia and South Ossetia, who left their homes after the Georgian-Abkhaz war of 1992-1993 and the conflict with South Ossetia in 2008.
