Russian journalists demand to close case against Abdulmumin Gadjiev

On far-fetched charges, Abdulmumin Gadjiev is prosecuted for his professional activities; the case against him should be closed, well-known Russian journalists have stated in their appeal in support of their colleague from the "Chernovik" (Draft) weekly and website.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on January 27, 2020, the Dagestani Supreme Court (SC) refused to satisfy the appeal against Abdulmumin Gadjiev's arrest and left him in custody until March 13, 2020.

In June 2019, Abdulmumin Gadjiev, a journalist of the newspaper "Chernovik" (Draft), was arrested in a case on terrorist financing.

A number of well-known Russian journalists have released their joint appeal in support of Abdulmumin Gadjiev; in particular, Ivan Golunov and Ivan Kolpakov, a correspondent and the editor-in-chief of the "Meduza", respectively; Ilya Azar, a special correspondent of the "Novaya Gazeta"; Tatiana Felgengauer, a journalist of the "Ekho Moskvy" Radio; Sergey Smirnov, the editor-in-chief of the "Mediazona"; and journalists, Oleg Kashin and Maxim Shevchenko have spoken out in defence of their colleague.

"Although our viewpoints don't match Gadjiev's ones in all aspects, we are sure that journalists cannot be put into SIZO (pre-trial prison) and judged for their professional activities, or for their words," says the statement. The authors of the appeal have announced a series of solo pickets in support of Gadjiev to be held on January 29 at the representative office of Dagestan in Moscow.
