Chechen TV Channel reports detainee's public repentance for theft
On February 25, a detainee repented on the air of the "Grozny" TV Channel of stealing a mobile phone. Residents of Chechnya found his repentance forced.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that residents of Chechnya have repeatedly repented in public of thefts. So, in December 2019, two women and a man declared their repentance on the air of Grozny.
According to a TV story, Aslan Djabrailov, a 22-year-old resident of the village of Tevzan in the Vedeno District, grabbed a mobile phone from woman's hands and fled. The victim filed a complaint to the police, and after that Aslan Djabrailov was detained. He faces up to seven years of imprisonment under an articles on robbery.
The detained young man had a conversation with a religious figure, who recalled that Islam condemned thefts. Aslan Djabrailov claimed he would never repeat such a bad act.
Authors of the TV story declare that thefts are rare in Chechnya, since they are "not typical for Chechen natives."
Public exposure of an offender damages the reputation of his relatives and friends, notes Fatima, an employee of a Grozny enterprise.
