PFPA activist arrested for ten days

Mamed Ibragim, an advisor to the chairman of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), was arrested on the charge of disobedience to the police. Members of the PFPA treat the activist's arrest as politically motivated.

On February 26, Mamed Ibragim was detained after his visit to the memorial to victims of the Khojaly tragedy, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was informed by Asif Yusifli, a member of the PFPA.

He announced the intention to challenge the activist's arrest. "Mamed Ibragim is a consistent critic of the regime, a former political prisoner, and the incident was used to punish him," Asif Yusifli believes.

Namizad Safarov, a coordinator of the Committee against Repression and Torture, also considers the arrest of Mamed Ibragim as unfounded.

Let us remind you that the adviser to the chairman of the PFPA had served three years in a penal colony and was to be released on September 29, 2018. However, he was arrested in a case on knife possession. The court sentenced him to five months and 22 days of imprisonment. Of them, five months and 20 days were appointed in the new case, while two more days remained from the previous sentence term. On February 13, 2019, the court shortened the sentence and released Mamed Ibragim.

  • Lawyers doubt prospect of bills banning religious clothes

The bills that intend to ban wearing religious clothing, including niqabs, in public places are causing a split in the society, which is especially negative amid the special military operation (SMO) in Ukraine. Religious clothes are not widespread in the country, this issue is not relevant, therefore the bills to ban them will not be adopted, lawyers believe.
