Ingush activist, Barakh Chemurziev, complains second time to ECtHR

He claims a violation of the principle of parties' contentiousness at trial, and a violation of the right to the freedom of assembly. Earlier, Barakh Chemurziev filed a complaint with the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), also claiming a violation of his rights, in particular, of the right to personal liberty and immunity.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Chemurziev and five other Ingush activists were accused under an article of creating an extremist community. In the opinion of Timur Akiev, the head of the Nazran branch of the Human Rights Centre "Memorial", investigators failed to define whether the facts of the case relate to each of his defendants.

In October 2019, with the help of lawyers from the "Legal Initiative", the first Chemurziev's complaint was lodged to the ECtHR. Similar complaints were then sent on behalf of Musa Malsagov, the head of the Ingush branch of the Russian Red Cross, and Akhmed Barakhoev, one of the leaders of Ingush protests.

On February 28, lawyers of the "Legal Initiative" project sent a second complaint on behalf of Chemurziev to the ECtHR, said Ksenia Babich, the project press secretary.

Let us remind you that on March 26, 2019, opponents of the Chechen-Ingush border agreement, who also sought the resignation of the then head of Ingushetia, Yunus-Bek Evkurov, refused to disperse after the rally in Magas. On the following day, law enforcers tried to disperse them, which led to skirmishes. According to calculations of the "Caucasian Knot", at least 29 activists became defendants in criminal cases. As of February 28, the number of convicted rally participants reached 21.
