Striking Tkibuli miners voice out new demands

On March 17, at a press conference in Tbilisi, workers of the Dzidziguri and Mindeli Mines demanded to open access to reports on the mine conditions. Public access will provide confidence in miners' secure work, human rights defenders believe.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on March 16, workers of the Dzidziguri and Mindeli Mines went out to a protest rally in Tkibuli. Miners had repeatedly gone on strikes because of their unsafe working conditions. At their protests, they demanded, among other things, to improve the safety in mines.

On March 17, Tkibuli miners held a press conference in Tbilisi in the Centre for Human Rights Training and Monitoring (CHRTM), where they demanded to open the general public access to reports on the status of safety in mines, so that anyone could get acquainted with the current status of implementation thereof. This mechanism will allow to properly observing the labour safety, human rights defenders believe. "These are legitimate demands, so that organizations and citizens have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with reports and have guarantees that miners in Tkibuli work safely," Tornike Gerliani, a CHRTM activist, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

Religious clothes are not widespread in the country, this issue is not relevant, therefore the bills to ban them will not be adopted, lawyers believe.
