Dagestani blogger Alibek Mirzekhanov sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment

The Second Western District Military Court found Dagestani blogger Alibek Mirzekhanov guilty of participating in activities of a terrorist organization.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Alibek Mirzekhanov was detained on February 21, 2019. A criminal case against the blogger was based on testimonies of two prisoners who claimed that in 2014, Alibek Mirzekhanov showed them propaganda videos of the "Islamic State" (IS, a terrorist organization, banned in Russia by the court, – note of the "Caucasian Knot") and was persuading them to leave for Syria and join militants.

Mansur, a blogger's brother, associated the criminal case against Alibek Mirzekhanov in Moscow with the persecution of the blogger by law enforcers from Dagestan. Alibek Mirzekhanov left the republic after being kidnapped and tortured in 2013.

Today, the Second Western District Military Court has pronounced a verdict against Dagestani blogger Alibek Mirzekhanov, who pleaded guilty to participating in the activities of the IS, a terrorist organization banned in Russia by the court, the TASS reports with reference to a source from the court. Alibek Mirzekhanov was found guilty of participating in the activities of a terrorist organization (Part 2, Article 205 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). The blogger was sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment in a high-security penal colony.
