Azerbaijani activist Agil Gumbatov left in mental hospital for another month
Doctors have again extended the treatment period of Agil Gumbatov, a member of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), in a psychiatric clinic. His defence has filed a complaint to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) about the persecution of the activist.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in March, Gumbatov was sent for compulsory treatment because of his criticism of the republic's authorities, the PFPA has stated. He was discharged from hospital on April 1, but on May 2, he was placed there again; and the term of his stay there was extended by a month. On May 12, Agil complained about his health problems caused by treatment with unknown drugs.
Gumbatov was placed into the mental clinic by a court decision; and the extension of his stay there is based on the conclusion of a medical expert commission, Agagasan Rasulov, the chief physician of the clinic, has stated.
Nemat Kerimli, a Gumbatov's advocate, said that he asked the ECtHR to recognize a violation of Gumbatov's right to the freedom and personal immunity.
