RF State Duma has frozen the intended reform of the European Court for Human Rights
On Wednesday, December 20, the deputies of the Russian parliament refused to ratify Protocol No. 14 to the Convention on Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, which forms the basis for operation of the European Court for Human Rights in Strasbourg, the "Interfax" reports.
By this decision, the Russian Parliament has in fact frozen the intended reform of the European Court for Human Rights.
Only 27 State Duma deputies voted for ratification of the Protocol at the required minimum of 226 votes.
The Convention of the Council of Europe on Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms was ratified by the Russian Federation and came into force for this country on May 5, 1998. Protocol No. 14, which amends the control mechanism of the Convention, was signed by Russia in Strasbourg on May 4, 2006.
