Azerbaijani GPO treats video with POW's incineration as original

The General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) of Azerbaijan has recognized the video footage of the burning of the body of an Azerbaijani soldier-prisoner of war (POW) to be authentic and opened a criminal case based on this footage. The Azerbaijani Ombudsperson has demanded from international organizations to react to this and other war crimes.

The video posted on the "Daytube.az" website shows five military servicemen and one person in civilian clothes. The body of the deceased soldier lies on the ground. The man in civilian clothes stands over the body; one of the servicemen brings some combustible mixture to him, which he pours on the body and throws a burning match. The video does not indicate exactly where and when it was filmed. The "Caucasian Knot" cannot check the authenticity of the footage.

Sabina Alieva, the Azerbaijani Ombudsperson, believes that the video really shows the incineration of a captured Azerbaijani soldier. "We believe that Armenian militaries did this in order to hide the traces of their inhuman and cruel actions. We strongly condemn this crime [...] and call on international organizations to promptly react to such inhuman actions – gross human rights violations," the edition "Day.Az" quoted the Ombudsperson as stating on December 29, 2020.
