Chechnya: lawyer's wife complains about financial difficulties after his detention
A court in Chechnya has found the arrest of the lawyer, Sergey Marakov, accused of hooliganism, to be legitimate. Marakov repeatedly helped his clients and colleagues for free, but after his arrest his family has faced financial difficulties, since there is practically no support, said the lawyer's wife.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Sergey Marakov was arrested in Grozny and accused of illegal drug dealing.
Marakov has a long experience of working as an advocate – almost 40 years, his colleague, Anatoly Shevchuk, has noted. He denied Marakov's guilt in the drug case. "I will never believe that Sergey used drugs. Obviously, they had been planted on him; and the case was falsified," Mr Shevchuk has stated.
According to Olga, Sergey's wife, over the years of his work in Chechnya, Marakov had no serious conflicts; no threats were made against him. When trouble happened to him, there was no one next to him to help, she has noted.
"His advocate said that Sergey was not feeling well; he was morally depressed,” Olga said. According to her story, the family lives on her and her mother-in-law's pensions: Sergey had no savings.
